Everyone Was Marvelling...

"While everyone was marveling at all that Jesus did, he said to his disciples, 'Listen carefully to what I am about to tell you: The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men.'" Luke 9:43-44

Everyone was amazed. They all could not believe what they had just witnessed and it was clear that God was in their midst. But Jesus was never one to sit and bask in the glory of success, instead He said something to the disciples that really ruined the mood. "Listen carefully to what I am about to tell you..." The Orthodox Jewish Bible puts it like this, "Let these divrei Hashem lodge in your ears", or let the words from God be heard. One thing is very clear, what Jesus was about to say to them was so important that He didn't want them to miss it. Then He lays it out for them and one can only wonder what each of them was thinking when they heard it. Just seconds earlier they were probably thinking about where this Jesus was going to take them; with His gifts and abilities He was going to go far and they were on the journey with him. The thoughts of power, position and glory would not have been too far from their minds. But now this..."The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men." Another version says "The Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men" (HCSB). The use of betrayal adds a darker, more dangerous feel to the situation. Now, it seems that Jesus will not only find Himself in some trouble, but there appears to be some significant opposition that will put Him there. Someone was going to turn on Him. I am sure His use of the language was not lost on the disciples either, the Son of Man, the Chosen One, the one who came to save all of mankind, was about to be handed over to the sons of men, the ones that He came to save.

He knew the potential glory that was available to Him on earth. It was the same as what the Devil had offered Him when He was in the desert, fame, riches and all the kingdoms of this world, but He never swayed from what He had to do.
